Record TAB turnover from Melbourne Cup

<p>The TAB is celebrating a record turnover from the Melbourne Cup.</p> <p>German-bred galloper Protectionist won the race yesterday, claiming his country's first ever victory in the $6 million race.</p> <p>TAB book maker Mark Stafford says punters splashed out.</p> <p>"It's the new highest turnover for Melbourne Cup that we've ever done. Last year was the previous record at $9.4 million. This year it's come out at $10.3 million."</p> <p>Mr Stafford believes having two Kiwi horses in the field increased the popularity of the event here.</p> <p>Around 650,000 bets were placed on the race.</p>
