Cruise ship visitors are expected to inject $18.9 million into the Far North economy this year, but it's next season which is really getting the tourism industry excited.
The Bay of Islands has welcomed the first of 40 cruise ships, which will bring over 63 thousand visitors over the season.
Cruise New Zealand General Manager, Raewyn Tan says this year has seen a slight drop in numbers, but next year the tourist industry can expect a massive boom.
"We're going to see new ships, bigger ships more ships and New Zealand's cruise industry will be recording a new record in terms of passenger numbers that we've received."
Raewyn Tan says up to $28.7 million will be brought into Bay of Islands in the 2015-16 season.
