More trade, aid and intelligence sharing could be part of closer relations between New Zealand and Fiji.

Pacific economic ambassador Shane Jones says New Zealand needs to recognise last month's election.

He says restoring relations is far more productive that refusing to engage with a Pacific neighbour.

Shane Jones says boosting economic growth in Fiji and across the Pacific, starts with reducing the cost of doing business.

He's been in Auckland speaking at the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police conference.
